Gangneung Will Invest KRW 49 Billion in ITS Implementation:
Transforming into a Digital City with the Best Road Infrastructure

A tourist city in Gangwon-do is on its way to becoming a digital city with the latest road infrastructure in South Korea.

In November 2020, Gangneung City announced that it was selected as the target city for the 2021 Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Implementation Competition for Local Governments promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) as part of the Korean New Deal: SOC digitalization in the road sector.

The city will invest a total of KRW 49 billion (USD 43,668, including USD 26,205 in national budget and USD 17,463 in municipal budget) to implement a tangible traffic information service creating a smart traffic environment by introducing six major systems: autonomous vehicle infrastructure and tourist assistance services, among others.

Urban area
⇒
Implementation of basic traffic information collection and provide a smart signal and autonomous driving system for real-time traffic condition monitoring and signal management for traffic volume.

Suburb area
⇒
Safety management by the implementation of actuated left turn on national highways and C-ITS infrastructure (road-surface-condition detection, etc.)

Touristic area
⇒
Introduction of mobility assistance service through C-ITS and parking information system to respond to tourism demand
⇒ Development of tourist sites to experience ITS services

These systems will be used not only to solve the traffic problems in Gangneung City but also as the infrastructure for demonstrations at the ITS World Congress in 2026, which the city would like to host.
To achieve the purpose through the phased implementation of various ITS services, Gangneung completed its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Master Plan in 2020, and beginning this year, it will execute the ITS.
