The 2017 Seoul Motor Show, which opened in Kintex, Ilsan on March 31, exhibited ecofriendly cars in line with the global automotive trends. Visitors were able to see the state-of-the-art autonomous vehicles in person. Many ecofriendly vehicles such as electric cars, fuel-cell cars, plug-in hybrid cars, and hybrid cars were on display at the Seoul Motor Show.

For the first time in Asia, Hyundai Motor Company unveiled its concept car, which is a next-generation fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV). The car was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland earlier this month. In addition, the Hyundai Grandeur Hybrid based on the Grandeur IG was open to the public for the first time in the world. Hyundai also exhibited “Ioniq,” an autonomous car that attracted great attention at the CES held in Las Vegas earlier this year. In addition, they released future vehicle technologies such as autonomous driving and connectivity—the most technologies introduced by the company at a motor show.

Renault Samsung Motors unveiled its two-seater compact electric vehicle “Twizy” that will be released in Korea in June. The electric cars “EV” and “Bolt Plug-In Hybrid” models, which boasted the longest domestic mileage (one charging distance of 383 km), were exhibited by Korea GM.

Importing vehicle companies also displayed various ecofriendly car models. Mercedes-Benz Korea released two models of the new eco-plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the new “C 350e” and the new “GLC 350e 4 MATIC” for the first time in Korea. They will be launched in the second half of this year. BMW also exhibited its plug-in hybrid models, the “330e” and “X5 40e.”

Toyota presented the “Prius Prime,” a PHEV model, which will be launched in the first half of this year, and the company exhibited the “Prius,” “Prius V,” “Camry,” and “Rav4” hybrid models. For the first time in Korea, Honda Korea showed its hybrid super sports car, the “NSX,” and the “CLARITY FUEL CELL”, which is an ecofriendly hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.

In addition, people were able to try out some ecofriendly vehicles, such as electric cars, at the Seoul Motor Show beginning on the opening day of March 31 through April 9. The Hyundai Ioniq, Kia NILO, Korea GM Bolt EV, Renault Samsung SM3 Z.E., and the Toyota Prius were available for trial rides. In addition, for the first time, NAVER Corporation exhibited its autonomous vehicles under development, demonstrating the autonomous vehicles’ data-collection process with video footage.

The Seoul Motor Show Organizing Committee collaborated with Seoul National University to conduct an autonomous-driving test on 4 km of public roads from March 31 to April 2. At this event, people experienced lane-keeping assist, obstacle detection, and obstacle avoidance without driver intervention.
