The commercialization era of the autonomous vehicle is approaching, and South Korea plans to operate the “Autonomous Bus” in Pangyo, Korea for the first time in December.

Recently, competition has been intensifying between automakers and IT companies to take the lead in autonomous-driving technology. The government and municipalities are actively cooperating in the implementation of autonomous vehicles, so it seems that the day when autonomous vehicles will be seen on the road is not so far in the future.

Last January, Hyundai Motor Company demonstrated its technology at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) held in Las Vegas, where the Hyundai Ioniq succeeded in autonomous driving at night. It met level 4, which represents “fully autonomous driving” in the autonomous-driving standards of the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International. In addition to Hyundai (005380), Mercedes, Toyota, and Tesla have reached level 4, and other automakers are also working hard to develop fully autonomous vehicles by 2020.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that autonomous-driving buses will be operated for the first time in Korea beginning in December, starting at Pangyo in Gyeonggi-do. Twelve-passenger autonomous shuttles (electric cars) will run for 2.5 km from Pangyo Station to the Pangyo Creative Economy Valley.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to cooperate actively by improving the related systems, constructing precise roadmaps, and applying CITS (cooperative-intelligent transport systems) technology in order to enable the operation of autonomous vehicles.

In addition, it will also cooperate with Hyundai Motor Company to provide a shuttle service within the Olympic event areas during the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. During the opening ceremony, the autonomous-driving vehicles will be demonstrated, and shuttle service will be provided for the public during the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

Hyundai Motor Company is scheduled to launch autonomous shuttle services at Gwanghwamun Station in Seoul this September. The autonomous vehicle research team of Seoul National University will also start a trial operation near Yeouido in July.
If it is concluded that there is no problem after the test operation, a test will be conducted on a mobile application that allows people to call a vehicle for a ride to a desired location.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Motor Group recently established an organization dedicated to research and development of autonomous vehicles and has been spurring the development of autonomous vehicles, such as the recruitment of experts who have conducted related research for more than ten years. Hyundai Mobis also plans to open a Seosan autonomous-driving field in the first half of this year.
