Can Tho City in Vietnam Shows Strong Interest in Adopting Korean-Style Intelligent Transport Systems (K-ITS)

Can Tho, a key city in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, is showing active interest in adopting Korean-style Intelligent Transport Systems (K-ITS). At an event held on the 24th at the official invitation of the Can Tho People’s Committee, ITS Korea presented a “Can Tho K-ITS Implementation Strategy.”

The event was attended by major policymakers including the city’s Deputy Secretary, Mayor, and Vice Mayor, who directly heard ITS Korea’s proposals for transportation innovation. During the presentation, Cho Yong-sung, Executive Director of ITS Korea, analyzed Vietnam’s digital transformation and smart city strategies, as well as Can Tho’s traffic and urban conditions, before proposing K-ITS solutions optimized for the local context. He introduced immediately implementable solutions, including:

- Traffic enforcement (speed, signal, load, illegal parking)
- Smart intersections and priority signals for emergency vehicles
- Incident detection
- BMS, BRT, and smart shelters
- Smart parking

Additionally, he presented a vision for jointly developing next-generation ITS technologies such as autonomous buses and patrol robots. Immediately following the presentation, ITS Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Can Tho’s Department of Science and Technology (CAST) to cooperate in smart transportation and urban development. Under the agreement, ITS Korea will provide technology, solutions, and consulting based on Korea’s ITS experience, while CAST will handle policy verification, standards compliance assessment, and support for funding. Both organizations plan to expand cooperation through technology transfer, personnel exchanges, and training programs.

On the following day, the Deputy Directors of CAST and the Urban Department toured major intersections and roads, personally identifying traffic congestion points and areas in need of improvement. An ITS Korea official stated, “Being officially invited by the Can Tho People’s Committee to present Korean ITS technologies to policymakers is highly meaningful. We hope this collaboration will help solve Can Tho’s traffic issues, improve citizens’ quality of life, and serve as a leading example of global ITS cooperation.”

Representatives from the Can Tho People’s Committee and CAST evaluated the collaboration with ITS Korea as “an important turning point for Can Tho’s smart transport innovation,” noting that it will simultaneously address traffic congestion, enhance safety, and improve urban competitiveness. They added, “Through institutional support and joint projects, we aim to achieve tangible results in traffic infrastructure modernization, digital transformation, and the adoption of new technologies.”
