Gangneung City, Moving toward Smart City

2021-05-20

Gangneung City was selected for the Smart City Challenge project in 2021 and will take a step closer to becoming a smart city.

The Smart City Challenge is a project in which the government supports KRW 20 billion in business expenses to the city, which implements a comprehensive solution for smart cities based on the ideas of private companies.

Especially in the project, Gangneung City proposed an integrated transportation system (MaaS : mobility as a service).
MaaS (mobility as a service) is a system that provides routes and allows reservations and payments for all means of transportation, including electric kickboards, bicycles, cars, taxis, railways, and airplanes, through one app.

The MaaS enables three ranges of movement.
First, It enables urban travel connecting KTX, Yangyang International Airport, and the Gangneung Ferry.
Second, It enables travel among cities using car sharing and demand-response buses.
Third, It enables personal mobility for short-distance journeys.

Along with MaaS, Gangneung City has set a goal of providing public transportation that is as convenient as Seoul’s public transportation in connection with the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project.

Gangneung Mayor Kim Han-geun said, "The winning of the Smart City Challenge project marks a turning point for Gangneung to become a leading smart city in the Industry 4.0," adding, "We will renovate our city where citizens and tourists enjoy it more comfortably, and make it safer and more fun."
