With the replacement of the intelligent transportation system (ITS) at the Incheon International Airport Expressway, the road to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Stadium is expected to be safer and more convenient.

New Airport Highway Co., Ltd. announced that it will start replacing the entire ITS of the Incheon International Airport Expressway including the AFC (automatic fare collection) and the bridge-monitoring system starting this month. The ITS replacement is the key to enhancing convenience and safety management by introducing and integrating high-tech ITS facilities and integrated transportation management strategies for the entire Incheon Airport Expressway.

In line with the opening of Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 and the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, high-tech facilities such as Multi-lane Hi-pass, automatic detection of unexpected incidents, and the real-time detection system for bridge fatigue cracks will be established. In particular, the world's first real-time system for fatigue-crack detection was adopted to secure the safety of Yeongjong Bridge. As a result, preparation for safety measures is possible by checking and detecting the fatigue cracks on the Yeongjong Bridge.

The Multi-lane Hi-pass, a system where vehicles pay tolls at their final destination without stopping to pay at the intermediate office on the private financed highway, will also be installed. The existing Hi-pass lane was changed from one lane to multiple lanes so that vehicles could pass through without reducing their speed. Multi-lane Hi-pass will be installed on the Incheon International Airport Expressway, and it is the first case of open highways. An automatic detection system (a radar detector) detects unexpected situations such as traffic accidents, breakdown vehicles, and reverse running in real time. It can detect unexpected situations located 800–1000 m away, even in bad weather such as dense fog.

“I hope that the Incheon Airport Expressway will be safer and more convenient for visitors and contribute to the success of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics,” the CEO of New Airport Highway Co., Ltd said.
